Sunday, Sep 30

We moved Eric's cats into the house today. But because my cat Tom is not a fan of other cats, we have to keep Eric's cats upstairs. :(

Tony doesn't look happy.

Time to go back to real life.

Bye bye, Mexico!!

We decided to spend our last day of the trip once again at Cozumel. Next time, I think I want to stay on the island itself. Preferably on the eastern side.

Thursday, Sep 27

Another day of exploring Cozumel, except this time we made it to the Eastern side of the island, which I believe was the best part, not to mention the most beautiful!!

Our last dive of the trip is a night dive. We sail out to the spot right as the sun is setting, and then wait for it to get completely dark. Then dive in the water with underwater lanterns to see the underwater world as it is in the night. This was definitely my favorite dive of the trip... we saw a Manta Ray, an Octopus, and a giant sea turtle sleeping in a cubby hole in the coral. Unfortunately, the pictures once again don't do anything justice. You can barely see the Manta Ray (in the first photo)... and I don't have pictures of any of the the other animals we saw. But here are some pictures we did get:

Today we went scuba diving in Cancun. The dive shop that we went through didn't offer near the level of service that we got from the resort, and the dives themselves were somewhat ordinary, so the overall experience was not as good... but it was still nice to be in the water again. I'm really loving scuba!

Today we visited Cancun, and after the adventurous day we had yesterday, Cancun was rather boring. My impression and memory of Cancun is simply a bunch of hotels and resorts along the horizon. There was nothing to entice me to ever come back to Cancun... I'm much more interested in returning to the Mexican jungle!

Monday, Sep 24

This was easily my favorite overall day of the entire honeymoon.

It all started with a trip to Coba to explore some Mayan ruins. (And a "touristic" sign at the entrance that made us smile.)

The big pyramid at Coba is the tallest excavated pyramid in the Yucatan, so of course we had to climb it.

From the top we could see the mexican jungle sprawling for miles around us. We could also see the other pyramid of Coba... a smaller pyramid, but still impressive. Although it looks tiny from the top of this pyramid!

In the picture with Eric, you can see the smaller pyramid in the top left.

One of the things that I loved about Coba was the fact that it was still so wild, with dozens of little paths that would cut right through the heart of the jungle. (And you know me, I can't resist an opportunity to explore a mysterious trail!) Even though we had rented bikes to travel within Coba, we had to leave them behind sometimes so we could explore on foot.

And looking up at the trees in the jungle was amazing!

Wildlife in the jungle is abundant if you know to watch for it.

After the trip to Coba, we stopped at a local "cenote" to swim. A cenote is a sinkhole full of fresh water that leads to a series of underwater caves. This had to be one of the most fascinating things I've ever seen or experienced. It convinced me that I want to scuba dive in a cave someday... But the snorkeling be itself was enough to keep me entertained for hours! My only regret is forgetting to bring the underwater camera. The view under the water was just as fascinating as the view from above!

We actually switched rooms yesterday, so this is the view from our new room. Off in the distance, you can see cozumel. (The second picture is a close-up of the ocean horizon in the first picture.)
